Material Focus — Denim

These pieces are rooted in the tradition of 1950s American workwear — a moment when denim construction, material, and function were in near-perfect alignment. The broken twill and cotton linen composition echo that spirit while bringing their own character: a denser, more textured surface than standard denim, closer in feel to a utility cloth than a fashion fabric.

With wear and washing, the indigo will fade along the raised points of the weave, the linen will soften, and the cloth will develop a patina that belongs only to the person wearing it. No two pieces will age identically.

Selvedge denim is woven on a shuttle loom — a slower, more deliberate process than the projectile looms that replaced it in mass manufacturing. The shuttle passes a single continuous thread back and forth across the width of the cloth, producing a self-finished edge that requires no additional stitching or binding.

This method fell out of mainstream production in the 1960s and 70s as faster, wider looms took over, but it never disappeared entirely. Manufacture Métis is a French mill committed to keeping this tradition alive, producing cloth for those who understand what the process yields and why it matters.

The selvedge edge is the most visible marker, but the character of the cloth runs deeper than that. This fabric is woven in a broken twill — where a standard twill runs its diagonal continuously in one direction, the broken twill deliberately interrupts and reverses that line, producing an irregular surface with more visual complexity and greater resistance to distortion over time.

The addition of linen to the cotton base introduces a further dimension: natural texture, a slight initial stiffness, and a surface irregularity that pure cotton cannot replicate. Linen breathes, softens gradually, and ages with an honesty that synthetic blends never quite manage. The result is a cloth that rewards close attention — and improves the longer it is worn.
