This field study explores the bird shelter at Sjælsø and the surrounding area. The lake, whose name is derived from the word skelsø, or boundary lake, covers 293 hectares and forms the border between Rudersdal, Allerød and Hørsholm. It is the largest in the Nivå system and is a natural, glacially formed lake which serves as a destination for cyclists, bird watchers and fishermen alike.

Sjælsø reflects a broader pattern across the country — natural sites preserved not only for their ecological impact but also for the recreational opportunities they offer the surrounding community.
